Hey, I'm Buu Nghi

I study data science, collect tiny cars, and overthink small details for fun. Welcome to my corner of the internet — part portfolio, part diary, part chaos. You can check out my work, read some thoughts, or just look at pictures of Hot Wheels I love a little too much.

About Me

About Me

Me in a nutshell

I like Hotwheels, dancing and data science 😁.

I'm Buu Nghi — part data enthusiast, part storyteller, part collector of tiny cars.

I care about patterns: how numbers reflect people, how design affects emotion, and how curiosity can become its own language. I like projects that mix logic with feeling, the kind that make data feel alive.

In another universe, I'm probably still in a toy aisle debating whether to buy a '67 Camaro or a Plymouth Barracuda.

Because of a bet on Spin-The-Wheel and an appreciation for music, it introduced me to dancing. What started out as a simple leisure activity to test the waters became one of my passions.

Oh by the way, I have a few old coins, 1970s Kodak cameras and music players like a mini antique collector. I love collecting 😊.

My Dancing Journey

Here are some of my favorite dancing moments captured on video:

Dancing Solo

Dancing has taught me that sometimes the best moves come from taking risks and trusting the rhythm. It's the same approach I bring to data science — finding patterns in the chaos and making sense of the unexpected.

Prevalence of Knee Pain and Its Association with Body Mass Index and Physical Activity in Women Over 50: A Cross-Sectional Analysis for Preventive Intervention | Research Paper

— Co - Author
March - October 2025

Project Overview

I served as Co-Author for the cross-sectional research paper, "Prevalence of Knee Pain and Its Association with Body Mass Index and Physical Activity in Women Over 50: A Cross-Sectional Analysis for Preventive Intervention." This project focused on providing data-driven evidence to design effective health interventions for this demographic.

Research Methodology

I conducted a comprehensive survey of over 100 women over 50, gathering detailed data on BMI, physical activity, and knee pain history. Through statistical analysis, our key findings conclusively showed that Body Mass Index (BMI) and exercise habits are significant and primary predictors of knee joint pain risk in this population.

Results & Impact

I then successfully compiled the findings into a research paper, which was published online (featuring interactive data visualizations), emphasizing the need for early nutritional and physical intervention and enhancing my skills in research design, statistical analysis, and communicating scientific findings for practical application.

Analysis of Nutritional Status and Osteoporosis Rates in Elderly Women in Highland Regions | Research Paper

— Co - Author
July - September 2025

Project Overview

I co-authored an in-depth research paper, "Analysis of Nutritional Status and Osteoporosis Rates in Elderly Women in Highland Regions," which critically identified significant bone health disparities between rural and urban populations to propose data-driven intervention strategies.

Research Methodology

I conducted detailed examination and analysis of dietary data collected from over 50 rural households, revealing an alarming health disparity where the osteoporosis rate in this cohort was 1.5 times higher than the urban average. This finding strongly indicated a significant deficiency in essential nutrients like Calcium and Vitamin D within traditional diets.

Results & Impact

My contribution to the final report involved articulating the causal link between diet, lifestyle, and bone health, providing clear evidence for public health organizations to design targeted nutritional supplementation and health education programs that aim to improve the quality of life for elderly women in remote regions.

Smart Cane for elderly with musculoskeletal conditions

Technology & Design Lead
December 2024 - March 2025

Project Overview

I served as the Technology & Design Lead for the Smart Cane project, a technology aid designed to assist elderly individuals with musculoskeletal conditions. In this role, I personally guided the end-to-end process, starting with the development of the functional prototypes.

Research Methodology

I orchestrated and executed rigorous user acceptance testing involving over 20 users to gather essential real-world feedback on the design and functionality. The analysis of this testing was highly impactful, confirming that 70% of participants reported improved mobility, a key metric that then informed the next stages of product development.

Results & Impact

This success allowed me to synthesize user responses into clear design specifications and strategic recommendations, directly shaping future product iterations and reinforcing my expertise in user-centric design and technical leadership.

Data for Change (D4C): Turning Data into Hope and Action

In October 2024, I launched Data for Change (D4C), a passion project dedicated to leveraging Data Science to address critical social issues affecting ethnic minority children and women in high-land regions. For me, data is the silent voice of the community, and my mission is to make that voice heard.

The Impact: STEM, Health, and Equity

Our work began by listening deeply, collecting over 200 responses, and transforming raw data into actionable reports that reached 5,000+ community members.

Bridging the Education Gap

Local data analysis quantified the STEM accessibility gap, inspiring the "Across the River" initiative. We delivered 3 specialized STEM workshops to 120+ rural students, achieving a remarkable 75% increase in student interest, particularly among young women.

Health & Nutrition

Analyzing nutritional data from 50+ households identified critical health deficits. This insight was translated into community nutrition workshops for 100+ residents.

Targeted Support & Fundraising

Our data-driven reports successfully raised ≈ $800 USD, funding 20 scholarships and construction funds for a local school. We also allocated 20 health insurance packages (value ≈ $1,000 USD) based on risk assessment derived from health data, ensuring support reached those most in need.

Empowering the Community

A core focus was empowerment. We trained 10+ volunteers in practical data skills (Python & Excel) for the "Highland Wellness Hub" Project. Furthermore, in-depth field surveys with 50+ ethnic minority women (aged 50+) provided crucial data, revealing that 65% of musculoskeletal issues were linked to factors like BMI and diet—essential findings for future intervention.

D4C is more than just analytics; it's about turning empathy into tangible change, ensuring every number tells a powerful story of hope and positive transformation.

Some Thoughts

Reflections on growth, identity, and the little things that matter

On Building Character

I think it's really important to deepen and explore the aspects of your character. Building your entire self-worth around a single title like "Smart kid" or "Sporty kid" would really hit you hard if that title is challenged or shaken up. It leaves you vulnerable, sensitive and fragile. That's why in the future, I could see myself actively trying more different activities to understand myself better.

On Dreams and Regrets

Any silly wishes that I have right now will be kept in the back of my mind. I don't want to dismiss these thoughts only to regret them decades later as to why I didn't try. I'd rather fail now than regret later.

On Finding Your Safe Space

It's really important you have at least one homey and safety place in life. I'm not just talking about safe in the physical sense, but the safety and peace of mind you can have at one place. It can be anything - house, library, even a random convenience store. When your brain associates a place with comfort, even the most stressful days can have its moment of peace.

On Late Night Walks

I find late night walks in the park quite relaxing in my area. It's a time when everyone is finished with work and is simply just enjoying their time in nature. Sometimes it gives me a place to let my thoughts run as I walk around the grassy parks.

On Student Life

Sometimes, the little problems in students' lives can be big for them. Students aren't taught on how to handle these little problems properly so it ends up exerting more stress on the student than necessary.

On Taking Accountability

Learning how to not make an excuse for your wrongs is very hard. Learning to take accountability requires a level of self-reflection and putting down your ego. It's easy to say that "I'm a responsible person" but it's ten times harder to say "I'm responsible". But being in a community that requires team work forces you to take accountability, and it's quite a humbling and eye-opening experience.
